The Russian Federation is a state in the north-east of Eurasia. This is a country with incredible natural beauty, centuries-old history, rich cultural heritage and a highly developing infrastructure.

Russia shares borders with 19 countries (the largest rate in the world). The territory is 17 125 191 square kilometers, the population is 146 748 590 people. It is the largest country in the world in terms of territory and ninth in terms of population.

Russia is a democratic, federal state headed by the president. The capital is Moscow. The country includes 85 subjects, 46 of which are called regions, 22 republics, 9 territories, 3 cities of federal significance, 4 autonomous districts and 1 autonomous region. Each region of Russia is distinguished by its history, natural resources, and traditions. Each has its own unique local color. The largest cities with a population of more than a million people are: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Samara, Volgograd, Omsk, Ufa, Rostov-on-Don.

There are eleven time zones in Russia, which currently observe times ranging from UTC+02:00 to UTC+12:00. The first time zone located in Kaliningrad is MSK-1 or UTC+02:00. The eleventh time zone in Kamchatka krai is MSK+9 or UTC+12:00.

Our country is a multinational state. Representatives of more than 180 nationalities live here, of which Russians 82%, Tatars 4%, Ukrainians 3%. The peoples of Russia speak more than 150 languages and dialects. Russian is the native language of about 130 million people (92% of the Russian population). It is also the state language of the Russian Federation.

The climate is mostly temperate continental. The coldest part of Russia is the north of the Far East, where in the area of the city of Oymyakon the average temperature in January drops below -46 degrees. However it is not so cold everywhere - in the Krasnodar region or the Crimea, for example, the temperature in winter reaches about +10 degrees.

In Russia, there are a large number of water reservoirs, rivers, lakes. These are about 2.8 million rivers and more than 2.7 million lakes. The largest rivers are the Volga, Yenisei, Don, Ob and Lena. And only in our country there is the cleanest and deepest lake on Earth - Baikal.
